February is here (✿◠‿◠) ~

In the unfortunate event of being born in an era of human kind where capitalism has become the source of purpose, February reminds me of Valentine’s Day. It reminds me of hearts, hues of pink & reds and sweets. And Not because I had any spectacular display of bad or good events or memories on this Holiday—I’d say my normal Valentine’s Day would be a normal day of working or lounging at home; And my best Valentine’s Day was going to a Home Depot and was given a cordless drill as a gift.

I still have that drill and I’ve put up many shelves on walls with it.

Anyway, I’m a romantic and I love love songs. I feel like they express things that I awkwardly cannot express well to others. I often have trouble putting how I feel into words but music allows me the opportunity to do that well.

So maybe that’s why February reminds me of Valentine’s Day. Because I just want a day or a month to remind me of love songs. Or quasi love songs that are kindda sexy. Maybe both.

Why did I picked these 13 songs?

Besides some of these being a mix of cheesy, catchy, sensual, funny and quixotic—There are parts of each song that resonates me with. I have found that each especially has some great lyrics or lines that paints a great illusion, expresses relative feelings or are just clever.

Another thing to note is how these variety of songs, from different artists and time periods as well as different stories and theme in each song, all play off of each other. Like there’s a greater story in the entire mixtape from start to finish, each transitioning into a different idea.

Blank Space by Taylor Swift, 1989 album (2014)

Taylor writes a playful, love-crazed story in Blank Space which was one of the first songs that made me really adore her. It’s fun, playful, vivid in imagery… Cause Darling I’m a nightmare dressed like a daydream…

Nice to meet you, where you’ve been?

I could show you incredible things

Magic, Madness, Heaven, Sin

Saw you there and I thought,

Oh My God, look at that face

You look like my next mistake

Love’s a game, wanna play?

American Boy featuring Kanye West by Estelle, Shine album (2008)

I am not a fan of Kanye but he is indeed talented. For the most part. This part of the song is my favorite where Kanye boasts about himself (usu) but I like Estelle in the background playfully reacting to the great flow of lines that Kanye delivers. Also it’s a casual, dancey, catchy song.

Dressed smart like a London bloke

Before he speak his suit bespoke

And you thought he was cute before

Look at this peacoat, tell me he’s broke

Magnets featuring Lorde by Disclosure, Caracal album (2015)

I’ve always loved Lorde’s voice and she was the perfect voice for this Disclosure song. It’s sultry and sexy especially because of the story of having an incredible magnetic attraction to someone else (that you shouldn’t?)

Uh Oh,

Dancin’ past the point of no return

Let go,

We can free ourselves of all we’ve learned, I love this

Secret language that we’re speaking

Say it to me, let’s embrace the point of no return

Broken by Lovelytheband, Finding it Hard to Smile album (2017)

Someone that I care deeply about sent me this one and I enjoyed not only the gesture but the idea behind the chorus—of both being broken and lonely, but we can be those things together… There’s something wholesome, there’s something sweet. Tucked in your eyes that I’d love to meet.

I like that you’re broken

Broken like me

Maybe that makes me a fool

I like that you’re lonely

Lonely like me

I could be lonely with you

Suga Suga by Baby Bash, Tha Smokin’ Nephew album (2003)

So, I remember this song a while ago (I graduated High School in 2004) and there’s a few things funny about this song. One of them is that some DJ remade this song sorta with a singer and varied lyrics in a kind of electronica-dancey style. The other funny thing is that I read somewhere that this song is actually about marijuana. But you, no surprise there actually.

You got me lifted, shifted, higher than the ceiling

And Ooh wee, it’s the ultimate feeling

You got me lifted, feeling so gifted

Suga how you get so fly

Drove Me Wild by Tegan and Sara, Heartthrob album (2013)

It is only natural that I include a Tegan and Sara song in this mixtape. They are essentially my favorite band and I remember singing so many of their heartbroken songs in my late teens to my late twenties. Occasionally now. But after the Con, a lot of their songs became more uplifting and colorful. Especially in Heartthrob, in like an 80’s pop kind of way. In this particular song, there are some sweet imagery of remembering moments and details of that one person that… Drives you wild.

When I picture you, I think of your smile

And it drives me wild

Your laugh escaping you, your head thrown to the side

And it drives me wild

Mine by Bazzi, COSMIC album (2018)

This was just a fun, cute, catchy song that had me dancing. The kind of song you blast in the car during a nice day with windows down and just singing and dancing to. I do those things.

Waste this night away with me

You’re mine

I can’t look away

I just gotta say

I’m so fucking happy you’re alive

Florida Kilos by Lana Del Rey, Ultraviolence album (2014)

Lana Del Rey, for the most part, seems like a Ride or Die chick. This song plays a great story that is true and classic to this songstress’ retro, Americana-aesthetic.

Sun in my mouth and gold hoops

You like your little baby like you like your drinks,

Make You Feel by Alina Baraz & Galimatias, Urban Flora album (2015)

This entire album kind of blows me away. It’s not over complicated, I wouldn’t say it’s the most brilliant album but it’s… Dreamy and easy to listen to. It allows you to let your guard down even for a moment and drift. Isn’t something like that beautiful in its own right?

Listen long, long enough you can love me

I’ll be just yours, you can hold me

Even let you undress my mind

Save it, play it, watch it then press rewind

I can give you what you need

Dancing in the Moonlight (It’s Caught Me in it’s Spotlight) by Thin Lizzy, Bad Reputation album (1977)

A friend introduced this one to me when we were talking about music and song writing. And I’m glad he did. This song’s little rebellious, “anything for love” attitude is reminiscent of adolescence.

Now I won’t get out til Sunday

I’ll have to say I stayed with friends

But it’s a habit worth forming

If it means to justify the end

Big Plans by Why Don’t We, Single (2019)

I definitely threw a curve ball by adding this song into the mixtape. I don’t know this boy group, Why Don’t We. The lyrics and song is pretty predictable and cliche. But… I think that’s why I like it. Because in the grand scheme of things—everything we do is pretty cliche anyway you want to try to spin it. So, take a chance on me.

I got real big plans, baby, for you and me

So love me for who I am and for who I’m gonna be

Ain’t got everything you want but got everything you need

Paris (Aeroplane Remix) by Friendly Fires, Paris EP (2008)

This is a classic for me. I first moved to Philly in July of 2009 and I remembered hearing this remix in places I went to dance at. So there’s definitely some house-dance-electronica nostalgia associated with this song for me. I do have to say that the original is equally as fun, more pop-rock than this electronic remix. But I thoroughly enjoyed that Friendly Fires album during that summer as well as this remix.

One day we're gonna live in Paris

I promise, I'm on it

When I'm bringing in the money

I promise, I'm on it

Our Song by the XX, Coexist album (2012)

I liked the first XX album more than their last two but this entire song is so simple… But so concise in its message. The idea of sharing and being there when things aren’t easy and being able to understand and know each other entirely; Having been there, done that; Understanding not only what hurts but also what mends AND want to mend; The idea of an us.

All I have, I will give to you
In dark times when no one wants to
I will give you me
And we'll be

All I have, I will give to you
And at times when no one wants to
I will give you me
And we'll be
And there's no one else

That knows me
Like you do
All I've done, you've done too
The walls I
Hide behind
You walk through
You just walk through

Well I know all the words
To take you apart
You know I know you're hurt
I want to mend your heart
You broke down
Why don't you tell me from the start
You know I know you're hurt
I want to mend your heart
And there's no one else

That knows me
Like you do
What I've done
You've done too
The walls I
Hide behind
You walk through
You just walk through

Well, I hope you enjoyed the songs I picked and why I liked them. I’m on Instagram, Facebook and YouTube for more Faunas content. Ciao~
